Artifact 1

Brief Description of Evidence:
This artifact is an excerpt from two video reflections I did this semester. The first video was taken so I could analyze certain aspects of my teaching. After reflecting on the first video I was able to make alterations to my teaching style which was apparent in my second videotaping session. I then reflected on the second video, comparing each session and the progress I had made.

Analysis of What I Learned:
I learned that even though it may be uncomfortable to watch yourself on camera, using a video camera to record yourself teaching may be the closest you can get to actually sitting in on your own classroom. For instance, even though you may think you are being clear with instructions, it’s entirely possible that when you watch yourself teach you might discover you are not. Or you might think you are calling on a variety of students but realize you call on the same four students every time. Writing the reflection was not the most important part of this process. The goal is to watch and reflect on your actions – writing them down just makes a record of them.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the INTASC Principle:
This artifact shows how I reflect on my teaching. By analyzing the videos taken of me teaching in the classroom I was able to actually see myself how others see me. This allowed me to make alterations to various aspects of my teaching style, including voice inflection, classroom management, and content instruction. This artifact demonstrates that I am a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of my choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community) and I actively seek out opportunities to grow professionally.
