iv.  Human Body Systems library of books in classroom

       2.  Objectives

a.  Students will research and explain the function and location of their assigned body part(s).

             3.  Motivation

a.  Pass out the corresponding folder to each student. Explain what is found in the folder and inform students they will now be responsible for educating the class about their specific body part(s). In order to do that, they must become the expert.

             4.  Goal for Learner

a.  Today we will be using the Internet for research on our body parts.

             5.  Content and Procedures

a.  Teacher Content

                            i.  Each student needs to determine the function and/or location of their body part(s) as well as additional facts. Any pictures found can be saved on the individual student’s H:/ Drive.

b.  Procedure

                            i.  Begin the lesson in the computer lab by taking over each student’s computer from the main computer. Some may have experience doing research on the computer already, but show students a place to start looking for information. Walk students through the process of accessing Mrs. Hacker’s website which has many websites already linked full of body systems information.

1.  The internet browser will open to the Parker Elementary School homepage. Choose Mrs. Hacker’s name from the 5th grade drop-down menu along the top.

2.  Scroll down and click on “Pack Your Bags.”

3.  Scroll down and click on “Passports to Learning.”

4.  Click on “Science & Health” which will take you down the page to Science and Health links. The first several are all body systems websites. Some of these even take you to other websites full of links.

ii.  Remind students of the address bar at the top of the page. If they have exhausted their resources on Mrs. Hacker’s website, have them visit http://www.ask.com/ and http://www.google.com/ to look up additional information.

iii.  If students find a picture they would like to use, show students how to right-click on the image and go to “Save Picture As” to save it under their file. Since students are logged in individually to their own computer, it will be saved under their name.

       6.  Practice/Application

a.  Allow students to work independently on research. Be available to assist with finding information by redirecting students and providing many different internet sites for students to locate information. Some websites may be blocked due to the school’s internet filter so help students work around these setbacks.

b.  Encourage students to take notes in their folders on the information they find. Printing will be unavailable due to ISTEP testing in the library.

             7.  Evaluation of Student Learning

a.  Students will be assessed upon the completion of their PowerPoint projects. Accuracy of their research will play a large part in their overall assessment.

             8.  Closure

a.  Inform students that online research is not all that is available to them. If they need additional information they should refer to their Health books as well as the many books found in the classroom.
